Creative Retirement - 21st Annual
General Meeting
On
May 23rd, 2002, the Holy Trinity Church Hall at 256
Smith Street was home to the 21st Annual Meeting for
Creative Retirement Manitoba.
It
was really great to see so many who are dedicated to
the retirement community.
Mayor
Glen Murray (top) was the guest speaker and enlightened
us with the downtown renewal projects and spoke of the
importance of seniors and their well-being in our city.
Ingrid
Wedlake, Creative Retirement's Winnipeg Program Manager,
handed out Volunteer Services Awards to 37 well-deserving
recipients. Congratulations to all who received the
awards!

Age & Opportunity Celebrates
45th Anniversary in Conjunction with Annual General
meeting
 |
| Theresa
Jachnycky, CEO of Age & Opportunity delivers a speech
to a full house. |
The
Winnipeg Art Gallery was the place to be on June 13th,
2002, as "A Kaleidoscope of Talents" entertained
attendees in celebration of Age & OpportunityÕs 45 Years
of Service to Winnipeg.
There
was a multitude of talent which demonstrated the diversity
of seniors and their contributions.
The
Stradbrook Choir sang songs appropriate for the occasion
and line dancers from the West End Senior Centre stepped
in sync with one another while Ballroom dancers, Pat
& Alex, enchanted us with their elegance and poise.
Then cloggers impressed us with not-so-much grace, but
with fancy footwork that made you want to keep rhythm.
We
were also treated with a reading of a poem called "I
Love Canada" written by a student from Iraq who
came to Canada and was learning to speak English in
one of Age & Opportunity's programs.
All-in-all,
it was a great way for Senior Scope to spend a couple
of hours out of our busy schedules.

Forks - 2002

Ron O'Donovan of CKVN-FM 106.3 (now CHNR-FM 100.7)
emceeing the event. |
Senior
Scope took time out to attend Seniors Day at The Forks
on Tuesday, October 1st. Most of the activities were
held indoors due to cooler temperatures outside but
there was still plenty to do and see.
The
Greetings included blessings by Elder Thelma Orvis,
and there were appearances by both Diane McGifford,
Minister responsible for Seniors, and Mayor Glen Murray.
Ron
O'Donovan of CKVN-FM 106.3, (now CHNR-FM 100.7), emceed
the event. Musical Entertainment consisted of the "4
of Hearts Quartet", the Seniors Philharmonica Band
and Sonja Lundstrom and the Misnotes featuring Waltzing
Matilda in a sing-a-long. There were Tai chi and Tae
Kwon Do demonstrations, as well as line and swing dancing.
A cribbage tournament took place and countless draws
for prizes kept the visitors hopping.
There
were displays by various senior organizations and senior-oriented
businesses.
All-in-all,
it was a great time and we will be sure to return next
year. We hope you do too.

an excellent facility which houses 85 tenants and has
a park atmosphere. Thank you for the invite!

CPR Retirees Club meeting
at Elmwood Legion on Nairn
Canadian
Pacific Railway (CRP) Pensioners on track
The
CPR Pensioners club meets twice a month and Senior Scope
was invited to share a little bit about our weekly publication.
The
members were very welcoming and all had a great sense
of humour.
It
was interesting to learn that the Prairie Dog Central,
a vintage train that runs from Inkster Junction to Warren,
north of Winnipeg on day trips for the public, is managed
and maintained in part by members of the CPR Pensioners
group.
Thank
you for the invite!

Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal
Recipients
Despite
the cold, Senior Scope ventured out to the St. James/Assiniboia
Senior Centre on January 21st, by invite, to witness
Karen Pirnie, Executive Director of the Centre, receiving
the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal. Jim Rondeau,
M.L.A. of Assiniboia and Bonnie Korzeniowski, M.L.A.
of St. James partnered in presenting the medal.
Karen
graciously accepted the medal at the Centre opposed
to the Legislative Building so that she could be with
her "family"Ñmembers, staff and friends of
the Centre.
"It
is your honour as well as mine," says Karen, referring
to her "family". She is credited to donating
countless hours of service in her community over the
years and for developing the Centre to what it is today
- 990+ member-strong.
Jane
Seal attended the ceremony at the Legislature earlier
that same day to receive her Golden Jubilee medal. She,
too, donated multiple hours of service over the years
in her community, at the Centre, and throughout Winnipeg.
Both,
Karen and Jane, received the medals for their substantial
contributions in their communities. Congratulations!

Painting the Town "Red"
Teulon Seniors Club Valentine's Ball
On
February 14, the Town of Teulon, approximately 30 minutes
north of Winnipeg from the perimeter, on No. 7 Hwy.,
was painted red with hats, shoes, socks, hearts, flowers,
and even walkers at the Teulon Seniors Club Valentine's
Ball. Many danced to the music of The Goldenaires and
Senior Scope was there to judge the costuming. All of
the outfits were winners!
It
was a social event that attracted close to 250 people.
This is just one of the many activities organized by
the Seniors Club which is 155-member strong. If you'd
like information, call Walter at 204-886-2311,
Doreen at 204-886-2324 or Irene at 204-886-2368.

All Aboard!
Senior
Scope was fortunate to experience a ride on the Millennium
Express at the McPhillips Street Station Casino recently.
It
was a truly enjoyable trip back in time as far back
as the prehistoric era. Dinosaurs were close enough
to lick your face. Heat from the burning Basilica in
St. Boniface was almost hot enough to singe your eyebrows.
Buffalo roamed the prairies. It was a great history
lesson in case history wasn't your favourite subject
in school. Best of all, it was local historyall
Canadian. You witnessed the great General Strike of
1919 in Winnipeg, the Depression of the thirties and
some breathtaking sceneries in a panoramic 3D view encircling
the train.
The
conductor, Wally, was a great tour guide. He kept you
bursting your britches.
You
can purchase tickets at McPhillips Street Station or
any ticketmaster location.

Transcona Daytimers Toastmasters
Club meet for a special "Shamrocks and Shenanigans"
St. Patrick's Day celebration
"Sit
back, relax and enjoy the meeting." This is what
they tell guests. As a guest on March 18 at the Belgian
Club on Provencher, Senior Scope did just that and thoroughly
enjoyed listening to the speakers. Not only do you learn
valuable techniques of speech-giving, but you learn
from each speaker's topic as well.
For
example, Catriona Younger spoke of Irish traditions
and stated that the first-born in traditional Irish
families take the name of both parents. Therefore if
you are a male, first-born and your mother's name is
Mary, guess what. Your name will include the name, "Mary".
Dallas
Bagby tells Senior Scope that the goal for this club
is to become chartered but 20 members are needed.
Daytimers
is just what it says. Meetings are held in the daytimeTuesdays
at 2 p.m., at Smitty's on Regent. It's great for those
who don't like driving at night.
If
you are interested in being a guest or joining this
club, call Dallas at 661-6199.
Come
and develop skills that will improve your careers, or
everyday life!
Transcona
Daytimers Toastmasters gather for a special
celebration.

Regional Floor Curling Tournament
playoffs for the MPI/MSOS 55 Plus Games: Selkirk hosting
Petersfield
Three
teams from each club played six-end games.
|

|

Pictured
above: 2nd from left is Francis Hall
|
Francis
Hall of Petersfield made and donated an attractive
wooden plaque to each team to be an annual tournament
trophy. The winning team's names will be printed
on one of the many brass plates.
A
hearty lunch and social team followed, after
which two highest teams had to play a 4-ender
to break a tie score.
The
results were:
1st:
Don Nedohin - skip, Francis Hall - 3rd, Geraldine
Nedohin - 2nd, Judy Chodek - lead, from Petersfield.
2nd:
Shirley Zamatis, Helen Walker, Margaret Pruden,
Leah Podalque, from Petersfield.
3rd:
Jim Holt, Peggy Holt, Doreen Typliski, Doretta
Boehmer, from Selkirk.
It
was fitting that Francis Hall will have his
name on the first plate on the plaque he donated.
